Project Information

• Westfield will demolish the former Robinson's May building and convey the land at the proposed plaza valued at $25.8 million in exchange for being relieved of profit-sharing payments through 2035.

• Westfield will maintain the park for 25 years so it won't further burden the City of San Diego's general fund – valued at $8.3 million over the life of the deal.

• Westfield also will be required to have more than 200 events a year such as farmers markets, outdoor movies, concerts and art shows.

• Westfield will contribute $1 million to the Balboa Theatre, Lyceum Theater and the proposed homeless shelter.

• Westfield will contribute $1.7 million for the Plaza Improvements and enhance treatment of the public right-of-way that surrounds the park.

• The total value of the deal with Westfield is worth an estimated $35.1 million.

• CCDC, on behalf of the Redevelopment Agency, has hired the Walker Macy design team to coordinate the public process, help imagine the design, construct the improvements and restore the adjacent historic plaza. The public design process is budgeted at $1.2 million and the construction of the plaza will cost a minimum of $8 million. It will be paid through downtown redevelopment funds generated by the Horton Plaza project area.
