As the heart of the San Diego region, downtown has the opportunity to lead as a model for sustainability and we’re already off to a good start.
As the chart below illustrates, the typical downtown resident today uses 20% less energy, 50% less water, and travels 60% fewer vehicle miles than his or her suburban counterpart. In other words, a resident who lives and works downtown can have significant savings in energy, water and carbon emissions.

The Downtown Community Plan estimates downtown's population to grow from the current 30,000 residents and 75,000 jobs to 90,000 residents and up to 165,000 jobs projected by 2030. Policies and incentives are being developed in collaboration with the City of San Diego that reward those building owners and developers who exceed California green building standards to help meet regional and state goals.
