PICTURE THE PLAZA
Public Open House: Help create San Diego’s new Horton Plaza
SAN DIEGO – The historic Horton Plaza in downtown is ready for a makeover, and the entire community is being asked to be part of this exciting, new project.
Through a unique partnership between Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), working on behalf of the City of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency, and Westfield Horton Plaza Shopping Center, the corner of Fourth Avenue and Broadway will be transformed into a world-class urban plaza along the lines of Union Square in San Francisco or Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland.
To create a space that is uniquely San Diego, CCDC and the design team is asking the public to “picture the plaza” and provide input. As part of the public outreach process, an open house is being held on Thursday, April 21 in the former Robinsons-May building (the old Planet Hollywood space) located at 97 Horton Plaza. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the design team will give formal presentations at 5:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The open house format is flexible, allowing participants to learn more about the project and discuss their vision for the new Horton Plaza.
In order to make way for the new, larger plaza, the former Robinsons-May building will be demolished, providing more public open space and creating a lively cultural center for the region that can host a variety of community gatherings, civic celebrations, outdoor concerts and performances, movies, farmers’ markets and more. The existing historic Horton Plaza including its iconic fountain will also be rehabilitated as part of this project.
