CCDC To Honor John Moores

CCDC TO HONOR JOHN MOORES

San Diego, CA -  John Moores, Chair and Owner of the San Diego Padres, will receive recognition from the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) Board of Directors at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 23 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. Chair Hal Sadler and Director Julie Dillon will present the Directors’ Award to Mr. Moores in recognition of his leadership in the development of PETCO Park and its significant impact on downtown’s redevelopment success.

“John Moores demonstrated enormous fortitude and perseverance over the past six years as he worked towards the building of a baseball facility in a fashion that stimulated economic development in East Village,” said Chair Sadler. “PETCO Park has proven to be the catalyst we all knew it could be, but much sooner than predicted and to a much greater degree.  This single project has already resulted in $1.4 billion in development in the area.”

Mr. Moores was born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, building his fortune in the computer software business while living in Houston.  But there can be no mistaking that his roots have become firmly embedded in San Diego soil.  Over the course of his nine-year ownership of the Padres, Mr. Moores has managed to instill a renewed sense of pride in the team.  At 59, he still loves baseball and the Padres even more.  Above all, he loves living in San Diego.

After the resounding 1998 election victory and the public’s approval of the ballpark project, Mr. Moores entered his JMI Real Estate, Inc. into a joint venture with John Burnham & Company, one of San Diego’s largest and oldest commercial real estate firms.

His involvement with academia reached a new level with his appointment to the University of California Board of Regents in 1999.  A strong community advocate, he is also a board member of the Campanile Foundation of San Diego State University; Trustee of the UCSD Foundation; Trustee of the Carter Center of Emory University; Advisory Board, San Diego Hall of Champions; Chairman, Neon Systems, Inc.; Trustee, Scripps Research Institute; and Co-Chairman of John Burnham & Company.

“Achieving much ‘More Than a Ballpark’ has been actualized through the fiercely loyal, compassionate and inspiring leadership of John Moores,” added Director Dillon.  “His   substantial community conscience sustained his vigorous and unyielding support for the new ballpark as the anchor of a major redevelopment program.  Mr. Moores will have a lasting impact on this community that will endure in San Diego for generations.”

“The Moores family’s commitment to the future of baseball in San Diego is unmistakable. In an ongoing way, they demonstrate the extent to which they care about the future of their adopted hometown, having become major contributors in San Diego’s sports, cultural, educational and philanthropic arenas,” added Sadler.

John and Becky Moores graduated from high school together, then attended the University of Houston and the University of Houston Law School. They have been married almost 40 years and have three sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.
