CCDC News: Downtown Education Forum Scheduled for Sept. 22

DOWNTOWN EDUCATION TASK FORCE HOSTS FORUM SEPT. 22

Public Workshop on Planning for Educational Opportunities in an Urban Environment

San Diego – The Downtown Education Task Force is hosting a Downtown Education Forum to explore solutions, both programmatic and architectural, for creating quality educational opportunities in an urban environment.

The public is encouraged to attend this free event scheduled for Sept. 22 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the San Diego Westin Hotel.  Keynote speakers include Council of Great City Schools Executive Director Mike Casserly and San Diego Unified School District Deputy Superintendent Chuck Morris.  Reservations are required and seating is limited to 300 people.

“The San Diego Downtown Community Plan identifies goals for increasing quality educational opportunities for students in an urban environment,” said Centre City Development Corporation Board Chair and Acting CEO Fred Maas.  “This forum, along with the research that will be presented, is an important part of discussions on how to achieve this.”

The event is being sponsored by CCDC and the Downtown San Diego Partnership in collaboration with San Diego Unified School District and the California Charter Schools Association.

The Downtown Education Task Force was established in February 2007 by a joint effort of downtown stakeholders including parents, schools and business groups. The mission of the Task Force is to identify, analyze, expand, improve and promote educational opportunities in the downtown region for all citizens.

“The Task Force has made significant strides to build partnerships among business and educational leaders, residents and cultural institutions,” stated President of San Diego City College Dr. Terry Burgess.  “Despite the progress, we need to increase the quality and quantity of educational facilities downtown.  The next goal for the Task Force is to create a Downtown Education Master Plan.”

Regular public monthly meetings are held at CCDC’s Board Room.  Additional information, agendas and background information is available on www.ccdc.com. Click on the blue bar for Downtown Education Task Force and then Downtown Education Forum under Upcoming Meetings and Events.
