CCDC ANNOUNCES WINNERS FOR URBAN SUSTAINABILITY PAPERS

Winning White Papers for Best Practices in Urban Sustainability
to Be Presented at the San Diego Green Conference, Sept.18

SAN DIEGO –Today, at the fifth annual San Diego Green Conference held downtown at The Westin Gaslamp Quarter, winners of CCDC’s Call for Papers issued in June presented their works. The call requested written guidelines for capturing the best sustainable design solutions for urban buildings, open spaces and public realm development in dense urban settings. These sustainable best practices will be considered for incorporation in CCDC’s Sustainability Master Plan that will guide future updates to the Planned District Ordinance (PDO), which lays out downtown’s land use and growth policies.

“CCDC is working to weave sustainable design practices and smart growth into the fabric of downtown with the exploration and development of green practices, policies, processes and incentives. Allowing the opportunity for professionals to offer their expertise and ideas pertaining to urban sustainability helps lead San Diego in a positive direction toward well thought out green best practices,” said Philip Bona CCDC Assistant VP Architecture and Planning. “The presentations will be a great added feature to the San Diego Green Conference 2008 as well as to downtown’s future success as a thriving urban environment.”

Three winners were selected by a panel of internationally recognized experts including

Robert Berkebile, FAIA (AIA National Committee on the Environment); Tom Paladino, President - PE, Assoc AIA, LEED® AP  (USGBC Board - Past Director); Uwe S. Brandes (Managing Director of Initiatives for Urban Land Institute International; Gwynne Pugh, AIA, ASCE, LEED A.P.  Principal, Pugh+Scarpa Architects; and Richard Swett, FAIA (Principal, Greenway; Former U.S. Congressman – New Hampshire & Ambassador to Denmark Retired). Chosen papers highlight solutions for sustainable practices that enhance the quality of urban architecture through methodologies, incentives and policies. The winning papers (listed in no particular order) are:

“Evidence for Sustainable Design that Benefits Human Health and Performance” submitted by Eve A. Edelstein, senior vice president of research and design, and Holly Hill, sustainable design manager with HMC Architects. This paper discusses new technologies and methods that will define and develop sustainable high-performance and urban design solutions which cater to improving the quality of human health and performance.

“Distributed Energy Generation through the Activation of Open Parking Areas With Biomimetic Photovoltaic Shade Structures,” submitted by Robert Noble, chairman and CEO and Pam Stevens, executive vice president and COO with Envision Solar International, Inc. This paper focuses on the importance of distributed energy projects that utilize photovoltaic on practical shade structures on the top of parking decks or in surface lots to create seamless integrations for renewable energy in built environments.

“The Ripple Effect: Water Management as Planning Catalyst at Multiple Scales” submitted by Julie Donofrio, urban designer and planner with EDAW, Inc. of San Diego. This paper addresses water management as a core issue for current planning, design and redevelopment. Donofrio’s argument is modeled after major cities around the world that have highly developed and efficient water management systems.

The fifth annual San Diego Green conference is being hosted by San Diego chapters of American Institute of Architects and the U.S. Green Building Council in partnership with CCDC.
