CCDC TO HOST EXCELLENCE IN URBAN DESIGN PANEL

Local and National Design Experts Discuss Possibilities for Iconic Design

San Diego, CAOn Friday, February 29, Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) will host a panel of local and national design experts to review the current state and future possibilities for architecture and urban design in downtown San Diego. Discussions will take place at Hotel Solamar from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Panel members include:

  • Karen Alschuler, FAICP, Principal SMWM, San Francisco, CA
  • Howard Elkus, FAIA, RIBA, Principal, Elkus Manfredi, Boston, MA
  • Paul Whalen, Partner, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, LLP, New York, NY
  • Gwynne Pugh, AIA, ASCE, LEED A.P. Principal, Pugh + Scarpa Architects,

Santa Monica, CA

  • Mark Steele, FAIA, AICP, President, M.W. Steele Group, San Diego, CA

San Diego, CA

  • Doug Austin, FAIA, Principal, AVRP Architects, San Diego, CA
  • Joe Wong, FAIA, Principal, JWA Architects, San Diego, CA

The purpose of the panel is to gain insight from urban design and architecture experts on possibilities for downtown. Workshop participants will hear teams of locally and nationally renowned architects evaluate several internationally respected “iconic” buildings. They will describe the attributes and limitations of these buildings in the context of their city and will discuss the constraints and opportunities for initiating such outstanding architectural and urban design solutions in downtown San Diego.

The event will be comprised of building design presentations, discussion topics, and small group work sessions. Public comments on urban design will be welcomed. Potential attendees must indicate their interest by e-mailing rsvp@ccdc.com. For additional information about panel discussions, please contact CCDC Assistant Vice President Architecture and Planning Philip J. Bona, AIA/APA, at 619-533-7116 or bona@ccdc.com.

Downtown’s redevelopment is guided by the Downtown Community Plan adopted in March 2006. The Plan calls for diverse mixed-use and high-density redevelopment that is both transit- and pedestrian-oriented. It emphasizes superior design and architecture and promotes new parks, public art, open space and the celebration of San Diego’s climate and waterfront.
