CCDC NEWS: CCDC Begins Children's Park Enhancement Project

NEWS RELEASE

CCDC BEGINS ENHANCEMENTS TO CHILDREN’S PARK

Community input helps drive updates for a more usable park

San Diego, CA—Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) will begin enhancements to Children’s Park this week. Originally opened in 1996, Children’s Park is located in downtown San Diego’s Marina neighborhood across from the San Diego Convention Center between First and Island avenues, Front Street and the railroad corridor. Scheduled improvements are designed to enhance public safety and increase park use. The total project cost is $101,718 and the work is scheduled to begin this week with completion expected in January 2008.

The improvements are a response to public requests and are supported by CCDC and the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department. The changes will yield multiple benefits including improved visibility, increased public usable park space, improved long-term health of both the trees and landscaping, and reduced maintenance costs.

“CCDC is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life downtown by improving our existing parks and eventually adding more than 50 additional acres of new parks and open space” said CCDC President Nancy Graham. “The urban core needs to be a livable, walkable environment to benefit all who live, work and play here and parks play a vital role in making that happen.”

Currently, Children’s Park has 16 grass mounds. In the enhanced design, the four corner mounds will remain in place, while the remaining 12 will be leveled and new grass installed. The 158 Canary Island pine trees are overgrown and excessively shade the park; 63 will be removed and the remainder will be trimmed. Those slated for removal were identified by a City of San Diego arborist and are marked in the field with an orange dot and number on the tree. The work will be managed by CCDC with the assistance of the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department, who currently maintain the park.

In 2008, CCDC will be conducting a Parks Needs Assessment Study to determine what resources downtown currently has in the area of parks and open space and to look towards the future needs as the population continues to grow.
