CCDC BOARD TO HONOR DOWNTOWN LEADERS Former CCDC President Pamela Hamilton and Downtown Residents Group President Gary Smith to be Recognized for Downtown Efforts
SAN DIEGO, CA— Centre City Development Corporation’s Board of Directors will honor former CCDC President Pamela Hamilton and Downtown Residents Group President Gary Smith, at the June 27 Board meeting to be held in City Council Chambers at 2 p.m. Chair Fred Maas and Secretary Wayne Raffesberger will present the Directors’ Awards on behalf of the Board in recognition of the recipients positive and lasting impact on downtown and their leadership efforts in downtown’s redevelopment efforts.
“These individuals demonstrate a tremendous dedication and commitment towards the vision of downtown,” said Chair Maas. “From spearheading the creation of the environment we see today, to passionately advocating for quality of life and other key issues, these individuals embody persistence, integrity and foresight in making things happen downtown. Their hard work and dedication touches so many and provides a great service to our community. We are thankful and proud to honor them with these awards.”
A catalyst in implementing the vision of downtown San Diego, Pamela Hamilton joined CCDC in 1982. She served as Executive Vice President from 1988 to 1994 and as Senior Vice President for her remaining term of service through 2006. While with CCDC, Hamilton was involved and responsible for major development projects including Horton Plaza, the revitalization of the Gaslamp Quarter, the Marina housing initiative and PETCO Park. Prior to joining CCDC, Hamilton worked with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. She has received numerous awards including a Presidential Award. Her professional service affiliations include the Urban Land Institute; California Redevelopment Association; Board of Trustees, Scripps Health Foundation. Hamilton obtained a Bachelor of Arts and master’s degree from Florida State University, graduating with honors. Hamilton currently works as a redevelopment consultant. With a passion for the world’s great spaces, she enjoys traveling and has visited numerous countries throughout the world.
An advocate for downtown residents, Gary Smith was born in Los Angeles and served in the US Navy from 1970 to 1996. During his 26 years of service, Smith was a navigator, weapons officer, operations officer, chief engineer, executive officer, commanding officer & chief staff officer, among other notable positions. Smith spent his last six years with the Navy as deputy assistant inspector General of the Department of the Navy. He retired from the Navy as a Commander. While in the military, Smith traveled to major cities all over the world, which sparked his great love of cities. An intermittent resident of San Diego since 1970, he began attending DRG meetings in 1996 and ran for DRG President in 2000. Smith currently serves as President and remains a passionate and vocal advocate for downtown. DRG efforts are aimed at quality of life issues for people who live, work and visit downtown. ###
