CCDC NEWS: Affordable Housing Development Receives Multiple Awards
NEWS RELEASE
DOWNTOWN AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT RECEIVES MULTIPLE AWARDS
Lillian Place Honored by Urban Land Institute (ULI) and San Diego Housing Federation
San Diego, CA—Lillian Place, a 74-unit affordable housing project located in downtown’s East Village, recently received three awards including one from The Urban Land Institute and two from the San Diego Housing Federation. On June 12, the project received The Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council’s Smart Growth Award for its efforts in strengthening downtown’s affordable housing options and demonstrating principles of Smart Growth. On June 14, Lillian Place won "Housing Project of the Year" at the San Diego Housing Federation’s 12th Annual Affordable Housing & Community Development Recognition Awards. Artists Jihmye Collins and Nina Karavasiles who created public art at Lillian Place, honoring the African American historic significance of the site, also won "Outstanding Development Partner."
“Lillian Place addresses a major priority in downtown by providing affordable housing targeted to families with children. Downtown needs to be a place where everyone can live. Developments like this make it happen,” said CCDC President Nancy Graham. “With the largest CCDC commitment to affordable housing to date, $103 million, CCDC is eager to continue a leadership role in promoting smart growth in downtown neighborhoods.”
Utilizing City of San Diego Redevelopment financing, tax credits, and both public and private financing sources, Lillian Place provides new housing options for low-and- moderate-income families in San Diego. Two-thirds of the units in the project are two- and three-bedroom units, vital to attracting families downtown.
With a CCDC commitment of $7.3 million, the Lillian Place development was a collaborative effort by the Redevelopment Agency, the San Diego Housing Commission, Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation, San Diego Interfaith Housing Foundation and others.
The project includes a play area for children and the revitalization of a historic structure for a new community center which may soon include after-school programs, adult job-skills education and computer classes. Additionally, the project celebrates the important contributions of the African American community to downtown’s history and growth through inspired art work on a dedicated wall outside the project.
A once-blighted area, East Village is transforming into a vibrant residential community. A new full-block park is planned directly across the street from Lillian Place. Albertson’s, downtown’s second new grocery store recently opened just a few blocks away. Also, the San Diego trolley line runs nearby providing a great transportation resource for residents.
Since its inception in 1975, CCDC has helped develop 2,600 affordable units, representing just under 20 percent of all new housing built downtown. Just three blocks south of Lillian Place, Studio 15, another affordable project, is under construction and will add 275 affordable units. Also nearby, 16th and Market will add 136 units and many more are planned throughout the neighborhood.
