CCDC News: Ballpark and Neighborhood Revitalization - Finalist for ULI Award
DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT FINALIST FOR
ULI AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
Awards to be presented at May Urban Land Institute International Conference in Chicago
SAN DIEGO, CA— Downtown San Diego’s Ballpark and Neighborhood Revitalization Project was chosen as one of 23 finalists for the 2007 Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Awards for Excellence from among a broad mix of projects – 167 in all – from North and South America. A jury panel will review all finalists and select up to 10 to receive awards at ULI’s International Conference to be held this May in Chicago.
“CCDC is honored that this important redevelopment project is a finalist for such a prestigious award,” said CCDC President Nancy Graham. “The Ballpark and Neighborhood Revitalization Project was a major catalyst for downtown’s continued renaissance, and this large public-private endeavor continues to stimulate the dramatic transformation of downtown San Diego’s East Village neighborhood.”
Approaching the start of the 2007 baseball season, completed, underway or planned development investment within the 60-blocks surrounding PETCO Park and the Park the Park is nearly $4 billion. This private investment will exceed ten times the public investment in the ballpark ($301 million) made by the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), the City of San Diego and the Redevelopment Agency. Projects completed, underway and planned for the ballpark area will result in 8,300 new homes, 1.3 million square feet of commercial space, 1,200 hotel rooms and more than 3,000 public parking spaces.
The Downtown San Diego Ballpark and Neighborhood Revitalization Project is the largest project undertaken by San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency since the adoption of the Centre City Redevelopment Plan in 1992. CCDC, the City of San Diego, the San Diego Padres, JMI Realty, Inc., and many other developers have jointly invested in the revitalization of this formerly blighted area. Acquisition of the ballpark site began in 1999 and construction was completed in 2004.
ULI Awards for Excellence define the standard for real estate development practice worldwide. In its 29th year, the awards program identifies and promotes best practices in real estate development. The awards recognize the full development process of a project including; construction, economic viability, marketing, management and design.
