Urban Planning Internship Opportunity

The Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) is offering an internship opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a field of study which includes major course work and experience in city planning, urban design, landscape architecture, architecture or a related field. The opportunity would provide an interested student with a working and learning experience within the dynamic, vibrant and growing urban environment that is taking shape in downtown San Diego, California.

CCDC is a public, nonprofit agency created by the City of San Diego in 1975 to implement downtown redevelopment activities. CCDC functions pursuant to an Operating Agreement with the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency and is responsible for a wide range of activities affecting downtown, such as planning, zoning administration, property acquisition and disposition to eliminate blight and revitalize downtown San Diego. CCDC also works with qualified developers, property owners and other public agencies on rehabilitation projects, new construction and public improvements.

CCDC is seeking an intern to assist in its general downtown planning efforts. The successful candidate must show evidence of a professional interest in downtown urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture and urban design through either documented course work or through working knowledge and experience.  The successful candidate must also demonstrate an understanding of Microsoft Office. The intern may perform the following tasks:

  • Perform research, documentation and assistance on various planning projects
  • Provide off-site documentation of various projects
  • Update historic maps
  • Process Geographic Information System (GIS) data
The intern would be expected to work 10-20 hours per week within a flexible schedule suited to the selected candidate’s needs (and may work up to 40 hours per week if preferred). The position pays $10.00 per hour for an undergraduate intern or $13.50 for a graduate intern. The assignment would last for an initial period of six months and can be extended an additional six months. Candidates should be enrolled full- or part-time in school and remain in school during the extent of the internship. CCDC is not a part of the Civil Service System and is exempt from Social Security.
